Tetovo sits 44 km west of Skopje at the foot of Sar Mountain, and its Painted Mosque (Sarena Dzamija) is one of the most photographed buildings in North Macedonia. The entire exterior and interior are covered in floral paintings dating to 1495 — a visual experience unlike any other mosque in the Balkans.
The drive from Skopje takes just 40 minutes on the A2 motorway, making Tetovo an easy half-day trip that can be combined with Mavrovo National Park or the Popova Sapka ski resort.
Getting There by Car
From Skopje (40 min)
Take the A2 motorway westbound from Skopje toward Gostivar/Ohrid. Exit at Tetovo (clearly signposted). The Painted Mosque is in the old town centre, approximately 2 km from the motorway exit.
Toll: Approximately EUR 1 for the Skopje-Tetovo section.
Parking: Free street parking is available around the mosque. The small square in front has space for 10-15 cars. On Friday prayer times, parking is busier — arrive before noon.
From Ohrid (2.5 hrs)
Take the A2 eastbound through Kicevo and Gostivar. Tetovo is the last major town before Skopje.
The Painted Mosque (Sarena Dzamija)
History
Built in 1438, the mosque was extensively decorated in 1495 by artists from the town of Debar. The paintings cover every surface — exterior walls, interior dome, window frames, and columns. The designs feature flowers, fruits, geometric patterns, and landscapes in vivid colours that have been restored multiple times, most recently in 2010.
The mosque is one of the finest examples of Ottoman decorative art in southeastern Europe. It was nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status.
Visiting
- Opening hours: Dawn to dusk daily. Non-Muslims are welcome to enter.
- Dress code: Remove shoes at the entrance. Women should cover their shoulders (a scarf is helpful).
- Photography: Permitted both inside and outside.
- Entry fee: Free (donations appreciated).
- Time needed: 20-30 minutes for the mosque itself.
What You'll See
The exterior features painted panels between the windows — each panel depicts a different scene: stylised trees, flower vases, fruits, and architectural elements. Inside, the dome and walls continue the floral theme with gold accents and calligraphic inscriptions.
The minaret is original 15th-century construction. The mosque sits beside the Pena River, with a small Ottoman-era stone bridge nearby.
Other Things to See in Tetovo
Arabati Baba Teke
A 16th-century Bektashi dervish lodge, 500 metres from the Painted Mosque. The complex includes a turbe (tomb), a semahane (ceremonial hall), and beautiful gardens with fountains. Open daily, free entry.
Tetovo Fortress (Baltepe Kale)
A medieval fortress on the hill above the town. The climb takes 15 minutes and rewards you with panoramic views of the Polog Valley and Sar Mountain. The fortress dates to the 13th century but was expanded by the Ottomans.
Tetovo Bazaar
The old market area near the mosque has traditional shops, bakeries, and restaurants serving Albanian and Turkish cuisine. Try the burek (phyllo pastry with cheese or meat) from one of the bakeries near the river.
Combining Tetovo with Other Destinations
Tetovo + Mavrovo (Full Day)
From Tetovo, continue west on the A2 for 60 km to Mavrovo National Park. Visit the mosque in the morning, drive to Mavrovo for lunch by the lake, and return to Skopje in the evening. Total driving: approximately 3 hours.
Tetovo + Popova Sapka (Half Day)
Popova Sapka ski resort is 18 km above Tetovo on a mountain road. In summer, the resort area offers hiking and mountain views. In winter, it is North Macedonia's premier ski destination. The road from Tetovo climbs from 500m to 1,780m — an SUV/4x4 is recommended in winter.
Tetovo + Gostivar (2 Hours Extra)
Gostivar, 25 km west of Tetovo, has a well-preserved Ottoman clock tower and a lively bazaar. It can be added as a brief stop on the way to or from Mavrovo.
Practical Tips
- Visit on a weekday. The mosque is quieter and photography is easier without crowds.
- Combine with Mavrovo. The A2 motorway passes through both — efficient routing for a full day.
- Bring a scarf. For entering the mosque, a light scarf for shoulders is sufficient.
- Fuel up in Skopje or Tetovo. Both have plentiful fuel stations. The mountain roads beyond Tetovo have fewer options.
- Allow 2-3 hours for Tetovo. The mosque, Arabati Baba Teke, and a walk through the bazaar fill a comfortable morning.
